Art Department

The Art Faculty aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum across the Key Stages that enables students to maximise their full potential. Schemes of work are designed to ensure that all students have the ability to progress and achieve. Students are encouraged to develop ideas by using the inspiration of others, experimenting with a wide range of materials and observing the world around them. The faculty aims to deliver exciting art lessons that students enjoy in a safe and secure environment and endeavours to instil students with a lifelong interest in art and design.

Location and Resources

The faculty is based in the top floor of the Technology Building in rooms T1.1, T1.2 and T1.3. There is also a ceramics room in T.07 equipped with a kiln, clay and glazes.
All class rooms are fully equipped with interactive whiteboards.

Courses

Key stage 3:

The Faculty follows the National Curriculum for Art and Design at KS3. The aim of the KS3 programme of study is to:

 

  • develop an understanding of the formal elements of art.
  • draw from primary and secondary observation and select, collect and present visual information.
  • appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures and to understand the contexts in which they were made.
  • develop ideas using the inspiration of others. To experiment with a wide variety of traditional and new media, materials and processes
  • develop confidence, competence, imagination and creativity working in two and three dimensions.
  • be able to reflect critically on their own and others work both verbally and in written form using subject specific vocabulary.
  • be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Key stage 4:

The Faculty offers the EDEXCEL unendorsed course in GCSE Art & Design and the EDEXCEL endorsed course in GCSE Graphic Communication.

The GCSE Assessment objectives are:

  • To develop ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding.
  • To refine ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes.
  • To record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions in visual and/or other forms.
  • To present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating analytical and critical understanding, realising intentions and, where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral or other elements.

Art and Design Course

Graphic Communication Course

Aims
  • To work in at least two disciplines from across the endorsed titles.
  • To work in wide range of art and design media and techniques including drawing, painting, printing, ceramics, sculpture and digital photography.
  • To enable students to work in the disciplines of advertising, illustration, packaging, typography and interactive media.
  • To work in a wide range of media and techniques including drawing, painting, printing, 2 and 3 dimensional work, Photoshop and digital photography.
Structure
  • Unit 1 - Personal Portfolio 60% of total GCSE marks. Themes: Natural Forms, Movement, Surface and Emotion.
  • Unit 2 - Externally Set Assignment 40% of total GCSE marks. The Theme varies annually. Supervised time 10 hours
  • Unit 1 - Personal Portfolio 60% of total GCSE marks. Themes: Typography - Myself, Advertising - Countries of the world, Road Safety.
  • Unit 2 - Externally Set Assesment

 

Key stage 5:

The Faculty offers the EDEXCEL GCE course in AS/A2 Art Craft & Design and the AQA GCE course in AS/A2 Photography.

The AS/A2 assessment objectives are to:

  • develop ideas through sustained and focused investigation informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
  • experiment with and select appropriate resources, media, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.
  • record in visual and/or other forms ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, demonstrating and ability to reflect on work as it develops.
  • present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating critical understanding, realising intentions and, where appropriate, making connections between visual, oral or other elements.

Art, Craft and Design Course:

Photography Course:

Aims
  • To work in at least two disciplines from across the endorsed titles.
  • Students have the opportunity to work in wider range of art and design media and techniques including drawing, painting, printing, ceramics, sculpture, textiles and digital photography.
  • To form part of an educational continuum from GCSE Art & Design.
  • To encourage independence, self-expression and inventiveness.
  • To produce practical and critical/contextual work in one or more areas including portraiture, landscape photography, still-life photography, documentary photography, photo-journalism, experimental imagery, photographic installation, video, television and film.

Structure
  • Course Structure AS Art, Craft and Design:
    Unit 1 60% of total AS, 30% of total GCE. Coursework: Theme: "Structures"
    Unit 2 40% of total AS, 20% of total GCE. Externally set assignment.The theme varies annually. Supervised time 8 hours
  • Course Structure A2 Art, Craft and Design:
    Unit 3 60% of total A2, 30% of total GCE. Coursework.Practical work and Personal Study. Theme: "Personal Investigation"
    Unit 4: 40% of total A2, 20% of total GCE. Externally set assignment. The theme varies annually. Supervised time 12 hours.
  • Course Structure AS Photography:
    Unit 1 50% of total AS, 25% of total GCE
    Unit 2 50% of total AS, 25% of total GCE. The theme varies annually. Supervised time 5 hours
  • Course Structure A2 Photography:
    Unit 3 25% of total GCE
    Unit 4 25% of total GCE. The theme varies annually. Supervised time 15 hours.


Enrichment opportunities:

  • The Art Department is open every lunch time and after school for students of all Key Stages to further their studies. KS3 Art club is held every Tuesday after school between 3.30pm-5pm.
  • The Faculty is working with The British Council on 'The Rivers of the World Project' and is currently partnered with a School in Bangladesh. The project has included a trip along the Thames and workshops with practising artists. Work will be displayed at The OXO Tower and will be exhibited as part of The Thames Festival.
  • Students at KS4 and KS5 are given opportunities to visit London galleries and landmarks as part of their GCSE and A Level research.
  • Students at all Key Stages are invited to participate in Art Competitions throughout the year.
